After a peaceful euthanasia, a Tawny lies still, wing-feathers in quiet palisades.

Hit by a car, this Tawny was photographed during assessment at WGVH. Unfortunately the damage to that left eye meant he would never hunt effectively again.

WA’s Senior Australian of the Year, June Butcher is a remarkable woman. Nearly 25 years ago, with the help of her late husband, the ex-nurse decided to start caring for injured and sick wildlife from her home. Responding to a clear demand, she treated some 70 animals in the first year alone. Last year the figure topped 2000. Today the Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is an internationally respected powerhouse of science, research, community involvement and environmental education. She is pictured here with Henry, a Red-tailed Black Cockatoo who has been part of the team of education animals for many years.

After all these years I am finally having an exhibition. A big thanks to my cousin Laura for kicking me enough to make me get up and do this. Click here to go to the exhibition site and find out more. This was a self portrait I did for a couple of local newspapers who wanted to run stories on the event.

 <img src="http://photos.beilby.com/thumbnails/thumb_20091221223837_melbourne.pigeon.01.jpg"><br/>
An edge-dweller of East coast Australian rainforests, this is an impressively tame bird. I saw it sitting on the open path in front of me and I started clicking furiously as I crept ever closer. I finally reached my close point - the 2m minimum focus of my lens, and clicked away, impressed at my flawless stalking. Then, as I shot, a family of Japanese tourists walked past the 2 of us - and the bird still didn't fly away. Of course the explanation is that my rhythmic motions hypnotised the bird.

He was quite content to just sit, waist deep (do birds even have waists??), in the water. The Nankeen night heron is very much a water bird, but still - I can't say I've ever seen a bird do this before.
<br />Note the lovely breeding plumage white head feathers on this guy.
